This is for people who are tired of being in their current situations, who are tired of being average, people who KNOW they can do better in their academics. This post will provide all the things you need to do that.
But if you’d love to listen to this in a video format which is definitely MORE INTERACTIVE (I recommend ☺️), you can watch it by clicking the link below, it’d take you straight to YouTube where you can do that:
If you’ve done that, let’s get right into the steps!
But ‘๐คจ’ who Am I and why should you be listening to me…right?
Well, let me tell you: I am a final year medical student who has gone from being average and nonchalant about her academics to having an A which is a distinction in all of my 4th year courses (Pathology and pharmacology) and in my 5th year, I scored 3 distinctions out of the 4 courses I offered. Are you still wondering whether you should listen to me? I won’t wonder anymore if I were you ๐.
Let’s get right into it!
1. Build a Rock-Solid Routine
The foundation of my success is a routine that keeps me grounded and focused. Here’s a little peek into my day:
- I wake up at 6 am without fail.
- I start my day with prayer, worship, and a little Bible study to set a positive tone.
- From 9 am to 5 pm, I attend classes or catch up on postings.
- When I get home, I either cook or order food—it usually takes about 2 hours.
- Sometimes I even grab a quick 2–3-hour nap right after eating (although I know I shouldn’t spend too much time on social media instead!).
- Then, I dedicate at least 3–4 hours to studying because I just love feeling proud of myself.
- Finally, I wrap up my day and hit the sack by around 2–3 am, only to start it all over again at 6 am the next morning.
- This routine—even if a bit rigorous when exams are near—shows that if you’re in school, your primary aim should be studying. “Not having time” isn’t an option when you plan your day like a boss!
2. Study Every Day and attend all your Classes (expand a lot on this point)
You’re going to study every day—no ifs, ands, or buts about it. And when you’re in class or a practical session, pay full attention. Don’t be that nonchalant student who’s half-present. Trust me, every little bit counts.
3. Change Your Scenery: Study Outside Your Room/comfort zone
Sometimes, all you need is a change of environment. Try reading or studying in a cafรฉ, library, or any spot outside your room. Stepping out of your comfort zone not only boosts your focus but also gives you that extra sense of seriousness and zeal.
4. Challenge Yourself: Push Beyond your Basics
Once you’ve got your daily study sessions down, it’s time to level up. If you’re comfortable reading for 2 hours, try bumping it up to 4. Set a daily reading or study-hour goal for yourself. It’s all about challenging your limits—because what’s worth doing is worth doing well.
5. Practice test/exam questions
This is an easy way I’ve found to test my brain and see what’s in it, I’m not a fan of the term “active recall” that some academia YouTube channels mention, where they use flash cards and all, but if that’s what works for you, that’s fine. But practicing precious test questions , especially the one that’s tailored for your school, don’t go doing bizarre questions that won’t help you (be smart *poke hand on head). You can start doing this early on in the session as soon as you start studying but you should do this especially close to exam time, it shows you what you know—and what you don’t, and what you should ultimately focus your energy on. I’d also advise to do this both on your own and in study groups as well (I’d touch up more on this later)
6. Eliminate Distractions
Keep distractions at bay so you can truly focus on your work. Here are a couple of tricks:
- Listen to music to drown out background noise.
- Put your phone on Do Not Disturb (DND) mode—my phone’s always on DND, and it’s been a game changer.
- This way, you’re not constantly tempted by notifications or random social media scrolls.
7. Prioritize Your academic Goals: Let Go of Non-Study Activities especially at dire moments
I know you love your side hustle, your business, and even content creation (I love creating content and posting so much) —but sometimes you need to put those on hold, especially when exams are around the corner. Remember, anything that is worth doing at all is worth doing well. Prioritize your studies, and trust me, the rest will fall into place.
8. Embrace Study groups and Collaborative Learning
Pleaseeee do not isolate yourself, especially during exam season. Better still, engage in helpful (emphasis on helpful) group discussions and study sessions with friends. Also, Teaching others is one of the best ways to learn yourself. And if you ever feel stuck, don’t be shy to say, “I don’t know”—reach out to your friends and let them explain. Rub minds together and let everyone grow.
9. Get Organized: Use Alarms and Calendars
Let’s get practical: alarms and calendars are your best friends. I always set alarms to remind me when it’s time to hit the books, pray and do important things because Mehn o Mehn, I do not trust my brain AT ALL ๐. Scheduling your study time helps ensure that nothing slips through the cracks. If you need a video on time management as a student, just say ‘time management’ in the comments and I’d hook you up ๐
10. Celebrate Success: Be Happy for Your Friends
I know this might sound a bit cheesy, but being genuinely happy for your friends when they succeed creates a positive cycle. When you lift others up, you’re more likely to attract good vibes for yourself, too. Trust me
11. Commit Your Plans to God
Finally, always remember to commit your plans to God. This is the most IMPORTANT TIP I could ever give you, ever since I started becoming more serious with God, I statuses suceeding better in school, you can ask anyone who knows me, that’s just it. And that’s not saying God’s a genie or ATM machine, of course I worked and he blessed the world of my hands. But beyond what I could control, God took over. He showed me Favour, helped my name to be mentioned in places that matter, he did that for me. He’s just that good, so let Him know what you’re aiming for, and trust that He’ll handle the work for you. Faith is a powerful motivator when things get tough.
Conclusion
Alright, ladies and gentlemen, that’s a wrap on my study tips for you to become a distinction student! I hope these steps inspire you to build a routine that works, push past your comfort zone, and always believe in your potential.
